As many of you have probably noticed, my blog posts have been nonexistent for the past few months. Due to personal endeavors, and a lack of time, I have been unable to write about skincare as much as seems necessary. Thus, I have decided to close this blog, and focus only on the @fairestofthemallsite Instagram account. Please, continue to follow me there, and through Facebook page as well. I still have MANY new DIY skincare recipes to share with you and am looking forward to the Summer months ahead!

There are only two other hobbies in my life that I enjoy as much as learning about skincare: writing and running. For the past month, I decided to take a break from the blog and focus more of my energy on a writing project (yes…it was NaNoWriMo) and it was time well-spent!

Anyway, I have also been hesitant to return because, like most kick-starting bloggers, I wondered if anyone seems to care about what I was writing…or the advice I had to offer about skincare. Recently, however, I have been receiving so many questions from you (mostly FB friends and some family members) regarding specific skincare issues. I quickly realized three things that you (my audience) wants:

  1. Advice for your specific skin type.
  2. Cheap ($) options.
  3. Local options.

I always assumed that with the internet being such an advantage, I could provide you with better options through ordering online. However, I have realized that many of you don’t like the 3-5 day wait, or to pay extra for shipping, when you can just run across the street to your local Walmart, and get–what you may consider–just as good-quality of a product with the added luxury of receiving it promptly.

However, if you’re going to shop at Walmart, please pick products with clean, skin-benefiting ingredients! It is so easy to see the claims made on the side of the bottle, or give into the $5 product vs. the $15 product, but I promise you that items with parabens, petroleum (pore clogging), and drying ingredients like Ethanol and Isopropyl alcohol and sulfates will only make your skin issues worse. Thus, I have created a list of advice, products/brands that you should look for at Walmart.

Water, Water, Water

Before you use anything on your skin, make sure your diet and drinking habits are in check. You may think you have a dry “skin type” now that winter has swept in, when in fact you’re simply dehydrated. They’re two very different things. Dry skin=Good thick moisturizer. Dehydrated skin=water, water, water. We’re supposed to drink 64oz. of water daily just to stay hydrated. One gallon if you’re trying to flush out your body. Either way, it’s a struggle. Here’s the trick: Get a good, sturdy water bottle.

I’ve been in the Walmart in California, Idaho, and Utah, and they’re all pretty much set up the same way. When you go into the beauty section, there is a designated “Natural” section. Some literally are labeled “Natural.” When you find Burt’s Bees, you’ve hit the jackpot. You’ll also find similar natural brands such as: Yes To…, Avalon Organics, Alba Botanica, and Shea Moisture. Each of these brands I have tried, and I can attest to their good benefits for your skin. Sometimes it’s a constant test of trial-n-error with these brands, but that’s why I make sure to research a product before I walk into Walmart, or read through the reviews before buying a product.

Sometimes life gets hard and budgets get tight, or other things in life take priority. Thus, the little luxuries in life–like beauty and skincare–fall on the back burner. However, this doesn’t mean our skin, or our health, should suffer. I look at these moments as a chance to get creative and make the most of Pinterest or skincare books like The Complete Book of Essential Oils, Skin Cleanse, and Homemade Beauty.

Most of these are my own creation, with these books as a reference or a guide. Many may think that making things yourself could end up costing you more than if you just bought conventional cosmetic products. Therefore, I decided to do a price point and timeframe for this skincare routine.

Conventional Products Routine: 1 month for $150-200 worth of products

(depending on whether I choose high-end or drugstore brands)

This DIY Routine: 2-3 months for $63-81 worth of ingredients

(this is keeping in mind that some of these ingredients I already owned, but if I were to have bought them all, it would have cost me $81 total)

I was once told by a doctor that, although an over-excessive amount of fat and sugar is not good for you, if you are going to eat fat/cream/sugar, than eat the real stuff. None of that chemical, artificial, “low-calorie” stuff because it’s actually harder for your body to “read” and digest it. I think it’s similar with your skincare.

I feel like my skin can recognize and absorb these simple, homemade products more efficiently than any chemical, artificial cleansers or oils that “emulsify” and foam up. The simpler, the better, right? I feel like that’s the best theory behind this routine: Simple. Clean. Nourishing.

  1. Oil Cleanser:

2 cups (16 ounces) Coconut Oil, cold-pressed, extra virgin
15 drops Lavender Essential Oil

Scoop out with a small spoon and apply to dry face to “melt”/breakdown makeup and dirt. Rinse off with warm water.

2. Water-based Cleanser: Shea Butter Bar Soap + Chickpea Goat’s Milk Cleanser/Exfoliant

1/3 cup (2.5 ounces) Chickpea / Garbanzo Bean flour
2/3 cup (5 ounces) Powdered Goat’s Milk
15 drops Lavender Essential Oil
15 drops Sweet Orange Essential Oil

Mix the powder, flour, and oils together in a bowl. Then, place mixture in a jar/container. After applying lathered Shea Butter soap to face, pour a small amount of the powdered cleanser into your hand, then toss in a cupped handful of water, press hands together, and rub into a thick “cream” and apply to your face with the bar soap, then rinse off.

3. Toner: Apple Cider Vinegar Toner

4. Face Mist: Rose-Orange Face Mist

Amber spray bottle
8 ounces Rosewater
15 drops Rose hip Seed Oil
15 drops Sweet Orange Essential Oil

5. Exfoliating Serum

2 0unce glass Dropper bottle
1.5 ounces Avocado oil
10 drops Sweet Orange Essential oil
10 drops Rose Hip Seed Oil

6. Relaxing Face Oil

1 ounce glass dropper bottle
1 ounce Olive Oil
15 drops Lavender essential oil

7. SPF: Protective Moisturizer SPF 30

8. Spot Treatment

2 tsp. Raw Honey
6 drops Tea Tree Oil
Spot band-aids

Mix honey and oil in a small jar. Apply to pimple/blemish with a q-tip and cover with band-aid overnight.

So far, I’ve been doing this routine for a month now, and it’s worked just as effectively as any other traditional routine I’ve done in the past (if not, better sometimes). I feel more comfortable without any foundation on my face, and my skin feels like it’s enjoying these natural, simple ingredients and some time to really breathe.

 

 

 

3 DIY Masks

I love facial masks! I love how they stimulate my skin. I love how my skin feels afterwards. Above all, I love that I can create my own mask for my personal skin issues, and alter the ingredients if I feel that my skin needs more moisture, antibacterials, or exfoliants. I have recently resurrected my enthusiasm for homemade face masks with these three different recipes, and my husband is loving them as well because they don’t steal from our savings.

(Average face mask= $20 per 8oz. | Homemade face mask= $1-3 per 8-32oz.)

Along with providing ingredients and measurements, as always, I would like to add a short description of what each ingredient’s “super power” is, and what skin condition it will target. These are unlike any homemade mask I’ve ever done before. Typically, I just did a detox mask with Bentonite clay or a hydrating mask with raw honey. This time, however, I really wanted to experience something new and symbolic towards the Fall season as well. I hope you enjoy these masks as much as I have!

Detox Mask

Mix 5 drops of Tea Tree essential oil into every 4oz. of flour (8oz. of flour=10 drops of tea tree oil etc.) and store aside in a jar / container. When going to use, mix 2 Tbsp. flour with 1 Tbsp. milk and 1/2 Tbsp. water in a small bowl and apply to your face. Leave for 5 min. and wash off with a warm wash cloth.

Hydrating Mask

Wisk ingredients in a bowl. Place in a jar and store in the fridge. Apply with fingertips or a foundation brush. Leave on for 20-30 min. Rinse off with water.

Peeling Mask

  • 1/2-2/3 canned Organic Pumpkin [Fruit enzyme/AHA packed • Speeds up cell turnover • Boost collagen production • Antioxidants/fights free radicals (aging) • Brightens/revives dull skin]
  • 1 giant spoonful Raw Honey (about 4 Tbsp.) [check previous mask]
  • 1/4-1/2 tsp. Cinnamon (depending how much of a “burn” stimulation you want) [Dries acne • Increases blood flow to surface • Adds nutrients]

Whisk together ingredients in a bowl. Transfer to a jar and place in fridge. Use 2-3 times a week to assist in cell turnover and keep skin bright and smooth.

5 Fermented Ingredients That Will Change Your Skin | Fairest of Them All: A Skincare Blog

We all know the act of fermentation can make some dang good food–bread, yogurt, balsamic vinegar, sauerkraut, cheese, etc. However, it could also help to improve our skin. Fermentation is the process by which yeast secretes enzymes that are good for the body, internally. Yogurt, for example, is known for developing natural probiotics which feed the good bacteria in our gut. However, it has also shown to benefit our bodies externally as well.

Some argue that this is false, due to our skin’s response vs. our stomach’s breakdown process of fermented ingredients. Nonetheless, the process of fermentation only increases the amount of amino acids, vitamins, and antioxidants. Which, last I studied, can only benefit our skin. You can believe what you want. I personally have seen the benefits of fermented ingredients in my skincare routine, and I would like to share a few of them with you.

RICE

Ever heard of SK-II Facial Essence? It’s been said that this is the product that started it all with fermented skincare products, but I’m not so sure about that. This Japanese-based skincare company exploded across the world when celebrities like Cate Blanchett, loyal user of SK-II for more than 13 years, and Kate Bosworth, the “face” of the company, started spreading the word on what fermented rice water can really do for your skin. Through the fermentation process of rice, multiple types of yeast are produced, but SK-II claims that there is one specifically that benefits your skin the most: Pitera (AKA Saccharomycopsis Ferment Filtrate). Pitera is one of the most concentrated yeasts, full of vitamins, amino acids, and organic acids that peak the skin’s rejuvenation process.

There are a few dupes, I’ve discovered, that are a fraction of the price of SK-II Essence. However, they do not contain as high of a concentration of Pitera that SK-II does. The best one recommended thus far is the MISSHA Time Revolution Essence. But, I will also be sharing a DIY Rice toner soon. So, keep following Fairest of Them All Site on Facebook and Instagram. 😉

GREEN TEA

There have been a lot of health benefits linked to green tea. Topically, it has been known to help reduce acne, inflammation & redness, puffiness, and dark circles. For someone with extremely fair skin [hence, the title of this blog], it helps to have such a good ingredient in my skincare routine to reduce any redness on my face when a pimple arrives or my skin has gotten irritated by natural elements.

I really enjoy Neogen’s Green Tea Cleanser with fermented green tea leaves in the bottom of the bottle. I used this shortly after delivering my daughter, and saw a noticeable reduction in the redness and dullness of my complexion. This green tea Innisfree Sheet Mask smells divine and really helps to moisturize and calm your skin. Perfect for an at-home spa night. If you keep your eyes peeled, you’ll be surprised how many local products contain green tea in them–even cheap bars of organic soap, like The South of France and Nubian Heritage African Bar Soap.

ROSE

Some people might feel that roses in skincare are a gimmick–like coconut oil–and that they’re far overrated. However, they have some pretty powerful advantages. For one, rose can be used on all skin types because it is so delicate and gentle, but it is known for helping dry, mature, sensitive skin types. Because rose oil contains such a complex blend of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants (which fight off free radicals that we come in contact with during day-t0-day life), it is one of the more pricier essential oils. Not only is rose soothing and smells nice, but it is an emollient to help retain moisture, antibacterial for acne, lowers stress levels in the body, and has proven to help heal wounds.

Rose definitely deserves as much credit for it’s interior capabilities. It’s obviously more than just a pretty flower, and you can find it all around you in skincare! I really started looking into more rose products when I heard about the SU:M37 Miracle Rose Cleansing stick which has one of the highest ratings for a Korean cleanser. It has bits of fermented rose petals in it that help to exfoliate, while the other 90% of natural ingredients gently cleanse your skin. Another awesome rose cleanser is the Andalou Naturals 1000 Roses Cleansing Foam, made from mostly rose water and Alpine Rose Stem Cells. I used this during my pregnancy, and every cleanse was like a spa treatment: so soothing, relaxing, and smelled amazing. Another really cool rose product is the Petal Multi-Use Oil that is a blend of natural oils with real fermented, rose bulbs inside the bottle!

SOYBEAN

What are Soybeans? Where do they come from? To be honest, I’m learning this right alongside you guys, because before now, all I knew is that Soybeans looked very similar to Chickpea/Garbanzo beans. Technically, they are part of the same family though. Soybeans are a legume, like garbanzo beans, but “soy,” itself, is a protein extract from the soybean. Soybeans originated from Northern China and have shown to lower cholesterol and the risk of heart disease. Externally, they are moisturizing, reduces signs of aging, and regenerates skin cells.

Although fermented soybean products aren’t very common in the States, you can find reasonable Korean products with fermented Soybeans in the ingredient list. One I’m looking forward to trying is this sunscreen by Kicho, and this beautifully packaged Soy Milk Essence Toner (which one reviewer said worked better than SK-II essence for her!)

I guess I could just say grapes…but wine just sounds more luxurious and sophisticated 🙂 Most people know that the antioxidant level of sharing in a little bit of wine each evening has benefited people in the Mediterranean. The antioxidants in wine help to fight of signs of aging, as well as restore collagen and elastic fibers in the skin. Red wine also has a high level of AHAs (Alpha Hydroxy Acids), which prevent acne. My favorite fact to note is that the polyphenols (found in grapes) prevent cell oxidation, restoring dull skin to a brighter, refreshed complexion.

Mathilde Thomas, founder of the skincare company Caudalìe (where every product is derived from grapes) , and author of the book The French Beauty Solution, discovered from the head professor of the Pharmacognosy Lab at Bordeaux University:

  ” …grape polyphenols [are] the most potent natural antioxidants produced by nature, especially resveratrol, the polyphenol found in grape skins, seeds, and stalks. …resveratrol could enhance the life span of cells and help people live longer, healthier lives.”

I have been using Innisfree’s Wine Jelly Sleeping Pack for a month now, and every morning, I wake up with significantly improved skin. Not only is my skin plump and moisturized, but it is brighter, and clearer. A couple of Caudalìe’s best selling products are their eye cream and their serums. They’re way out of my budget, but they both have some of the highest ratings I’ve ever seen, and there’s a reason why: they work. Some cheaper products are the Neogen Bio-peel Gauze Peeling Wine and these adorable packaged Wine Sleeping Masks by Holika Holika.

I hate when my skin gets in a funk. Usually, it is post stress-induced situation or post-traveling. Sometimes, it’s when I’ve been using too many makeup products on my face and haven’t given my skin a chance to breathe. And, I know, when I’m not eating good–whole grains, fruits, vegetables, small amounts of cheese and meat–it’s like waiting for a bomb to go off, and it’s out of my control. I will, without fail, get a breakout from eating too many processed foods/sugars. This happens to everyone, most of the time.

What is a Skin Detox?

Once I’ve returned to my normal, healthy eating habits, I like to do a skin detox. A skin detox is similar to doing a digestive system detox. You offer your skin a chance to self-cleanse by eliminating certain products for a set period of time to see faster results. There are 3 different ways of doing a skin detox, and each way is a more/less advanced at detoxing your skin.

1. No Makeup for 5-7 Days

   Pick a [week] when you plan to lounge around the house, or when you are feeling particularly rebellious. I promise you that if you have to see people, they won’t care that you’re makeup-free nearly as much as you think they will.”

This is a rather mild way of detoxing your skin. Actually, most women…and some men? should avoid wearing makeup on a daily basis. Makeup is meant to make you look older and more mature, but the reality is just that: makeup literally ages your skin faster. Thus, the less makeup you wear, the better. Try to just focus on your regular skincare routine morning and night. Add in a detoxing clay/charcoal mask a couple times through the week, and don’t forget to still apply your SPF moisturizer during the day.

2. Supplement Natural Products

The idea that you have to wash with products in order to get clean is marketing hype. Water cleans your skin, and your skin cleans your skin. It doesn’t [always] need soap–it needs a break. It needs to breathe.”

This routine concentrates on switching out a few of your store-bought skincare products with singular, natural products–in addition to avoiding makeup–for a week. For example, you could switch out your product cleanser with raw honey or castile soap; you could switch your conventional toner with a DIY Apple Cider Vinegar toner; or you could use Cold-pressed Olive oil or Avocado oil instead of your cream moisturizer. Whatever is easiest and available to supplement, do it! The less ingredients you’re applying to your skin, the easier it is on your skin to repair itself and fight off bacteria.

3. Nothing But Oil

Some of my clients love the challenge of going completely cold turkey, like I did. The second I suggest the idea of a product break, it’s as if they’ve been waiting for permission to abandon their beauty regimens their whole lives.”

The final and most effective way of detoxing your skin is taking a week-long break from makeup and all of your regular skincare products. You only use one thing morning and evening: oil. You use it to cleanse, tone, and moisturize all in one step. In the morning and the evening, rub your cold-pressed, extra virgin oil on your dry, makeup-free face, then splash with warm water 10 times. If there is still excess oil still on your face, don’t worry about it. This will be what keeps your skin moisturized throughout the day/night. Just pat dry with your face towel, and you’re good.

Which Oil Do I Use?

This depends on your skin type, but it also depends on your personal experience with certain oils. You can also mix a few oils together for extra nutrients. Here are a few recommendations for specific skin types:

All– Jojoba Oil, Avocado Oil, Argan Oil

Acne Prone/Oily– Almond Oil, Grapeseed Oil, Hazelnut Oil

Dry– Olive Oil, Rose Hip Seed Oil, Coconut Oil

I also did this skin detox after I delivered my daughter because I felt like I hadn’t had the chance to properly do my skincare routine for 4 days. Plus, due to all the work my body was doing to recover and feed my daughter, my skin felt so dry, dull, and blemished along my jawline. This detox helped to reset my skin back to where it was before the delivery.

My Top 5 Favorite Cold-Pressed Oils | Fairest of Them All: A Skincare Blog

1. Avocado Oil

Although olive oil is my favorite oil to cook with, Avocado oil is the first oil that got me hooked on natural skincare. Avocado oil is so beneficial to our skin because it is mostly made up of proteins and unsaturated fat. Because the third layer of our skin (subcutaneous tissue) is made up of mostly fat, this oil is absorbed deeply and easily into the skin. Thus, it is a great moisturizer for the winter or fun to use as a base oil in a DIY serum. I used this during my winter semester in Rexburg, ID. I would press it into my skin at night, after washing and toning, and every morning I woke up my skin looked so healthy! So much brighter and clearer. I like Olivado’s Cold-pressed Avocado oil 🙂

2. Olive Oil

To be honest, I use olive oil more to cook than I do for my skin. (Obviously, my husband is a native Italian and would rather use it to cook and for medicinal purposes.) However, extra-virgin olive oil has so many properties that can protect your skin, help it to heal, and is also a big lipid, so it absorbs into the skin deeply.

I have Normal/Dry skin, and I love using olive oil in a sugar scrub that I make in the winter, for added moisture. I would not recommend olive oil for someone with oily skin because it will most-likely break you out. If you do use it, there is no need for a moisturizer. Just pat your skin dry after rinsing the oil off  and carry on with your day. While this Oliveto Olive oil is fine for cooking, I would recommend La Tourangelle, Bragg’s , or Colavita Premium Cold-pressed Extra Virgin Olive oil (these options have retained most of their nutrients because it is the “first press” of the olives and it hasn’t been diminished in any way by heat).

3. Coconut Oil

My third favorite oil is probably most people’s top-favorite oil because their are so many multi-uses for it–skin, hair, body, teeth, cooking, baking, etc. I have come to realize that it has everything to do with the kind of coconut oil you purchase. There is a giant tub of coconut oil at Winco that my husband and I get for cooking and baking, but I would never think about putting it on my face. It is “organic,” but I’m pretty sure it has been processed through heat because it has a funny metallic smell to it.

Other brands, like Nutiva or Nature’s Way have a wonderful, natural smell of coconut to them. It just makes you want to use it more and more often! I like using coconut oil to remove my makeup, or as a first-step oil-cleanse mixed with 1/3 castor oil.

4. Macadamia Nut Oil

Again, Macadamia Nut oil is used more for my hair, but it is also extremely rewarding for your skin! You know how buttery and rich macadamia nuts are? Well, that’s exactly how the oil is. It is not heavy like olive oil, but it is strong with fatty acids which are very similar to human sebum, which the skin secretes in order to protect the skin.

After I delivered my daughter, my skin was so dry and dull-looking. I used this oil on my face day and night, as an oil detox, to help my skin gain some nutrients and moisture back. I also like to use a pea-size amount of this Olivado Macadamia Nut Oil on the ends of my hair after I get out of the shower to keep from getting split ends and brittle hair. Last time I went in to get my hair done, the man cutting my hair just kept staring at the ends of my hair saying, “Your hair looks so healthy!….it’s so healthy!” I assume it must be working 😉

5. Grapeseed Oil

Last, is this beautiful blessing from God! (The grapeseed oil pictured above is not nearly as wonderful as the cleaner, expeller-pressed, extra-virgin grapeseed oils I will recommend). Grape seed oil is the ultimate anti-aging oil. The grape itself has so many elements to it that help slow the aging process within our cells and organs. Using it topically will help you rebuild collagen after exfoliating, or if you are suffering with scars.

I used this oil as a massage oil for my husband. Just add some lavender oil and it’s that much more aiding to your skin and body as a whole. I would HIGHLY recommend checking out one of these purer Grapeseed oils by La Tourangelle or Heritage.

DIY Acne Spot Treatment | Fairest of Them All: A Skincare Blog

Most people will get acne at some point in their life. Whether it’s hormones, stress, or a poor diet, we are all bound to get a few blemishes at least once or twice a month. The biggest difference comes from eating a clean diet. You’ll find that you won’t get any blemishes for months, but even stress and hormones can cause a breakout. Thus, it is always good to have an acne spot treatment on hand.

1. Mix the Honey and essential oil in a small dish, then transfer to the empty jar. Before going to bed, use a Q-tip to apply a small amount to blemishes, so you don’t transfer bacteria to the entire jar. Then apply a pimple patch over the spot treatment to keep it from rubbing off on your pillow, or our fingers from touching it.

The Purpose of Each Skincare Product: Do You Really Need All 11 Steps?

 

You might have heard of this huge movement that’s going on. It’s called the 10-Step Korean Skin care Routine. Because I love researching skin care, I have read 16+ articles and two books about it. I personally feel like it is everywhere. Surprisingly, I still talk to most of my friends who haven’t seen anything beyond propaganda for a stripping cleanser, astringent toner, and moisturizer where the main ingredient is petroleum (which creates a plastic-like coating on your skin and clogs your pores instead of nourishing your skin).

I hope this blog post will inform you about each step in skin care, and assist you in building your own routine. The optional steps all depend on your skin type and anything you might be struggling with specifically. If your skin is exactly where you want it to be, then you may not need to add any treatments or additions. If you are trying to target acne, dark spots, dullness, under eye bags, etc. Then, you might want to consider adding a step into your routine to aid in that issue.

Makeup Remover

Oil Cleanser • Cleansing Water • Face Wipes

[NECESSARY]

These aren’t just for the evening, but can be used as a first-step cleanser in the morning. Not only do they break up makeup, they also lift off dirt and sebum (which is what clogs your pores in the first place.) When you us the oil cleansers with a hot, muslin cloth, this helps to open your pores for the second facial cleanse. If you’re a more oily skin type, I would suggest trying a water cleanser first. But, don’t be afraid of an oil cleanser either.

The science: oil sticks to oil, right? This means that, after a long day/night of sweating and buildup, you’ll really deep-clean your pores and makeup by pulling it out with an oil cleanser. Out of all the steps I’ve added to my skin care routine, I’m pretty sure this step (specifically an oil cleanser–not just a face wipe) has changed my skin’s appearance.

Facial Cleanser
Foam • Bar Soap • Gel

[NECESSARY]

The second facial cleanse can come in the form of a thick foam, a solid soap, or an exfoliating cleanser that will thoroughly remove any leftover dirt, makeup residue or oil. However, Kerry Thompson and Coco Park advise in Korean Beauty Secrets, that it’s important to “select a cleanser with a proper pH. Cleansers with a high pH can disrupt your skin’s slightly acidic, protective barrier and raise your skin’s pH over time.” The ideal pH for a cleanser is between 5.0-6.0. Make sure to check the ingredients list of your cleanser and look for gentle oils, herbs, and fermented ingredients which typically have a low pH (4.6 or lower!)

Exfoliator
Physical • Chemical Peel

[NECESSARY]

Our bodies naturally shed millions of dead skin cells everyday; however, as we get older, our “cell turnover” slows down. This causes a build up of dead skin cells that sit on the surface of our skin, clogging our pores, making our skin look dull and aged. Thus, God blessed us with natural exfoliants like sand…or ground sea kelp and foods with enzymes to eat away at that dead skin like lemon, pineapple, papaya, and pumpkin.

Exfoliating can : reduce the appearance of pore size, prevent blackheads and dull skin, speed up skin turnover, and brighten skin and lighten dark spots. Due to the fact that it assists in such a vital reaction of our skin, I consider it a necessary step in a skin care routine.

Toner
Hydrosol • Low pH • AHA/BHA

[OPTIONAL]

Most American cosmetic companies have skewed the idea of a toner as a third cleansing step, with alcohol as the top ingredient to help “clean” any leftover residue on your skin (which only strips your skin of its natural, healthy oils.) However, a toner can be multiple things in one, including: soothing, exfoliating, brightening, or pH balancing. Thompson and Park say that a toner should have the ingredients “designed to add moisture to the skin that might be stripped away during the cleansing process and to increase the penetration of the skin care products that follow.”

Your skin is kind of like a sponge that has multiple layers and when you wet a sponge, it can better absorb the soap or liquid you’re trying to wipe up, right? Same goes for your skin. When you add a toner, it acts like a humectant to help better absorb and hold moisture from the products you add later, whether it’s just a moisturizer, a serum, or a face oil.

Nourishment
Essence • Serum • Ampoule

[OPTIONAL]

Technically these wouldn’t collectively be called “nourishment,” they would typically be referred to as a “treatment” or a “booster” for your skin because they are all packed with the most powerful, nourishing ingredients used to focus and prevent specific needs.

An essence is a watery liquid, sometimes almost a gel-type formula, that could be used interchangeable as a toner. An essence is also a humectant to prepare skin for following nutrients and moisturizer; but, it usually has added nutrients that a toner doesn’t have. Next, are serums and ampoules. Serums and ampoules are both oils jammed with the strongest, purest vitamins and nutrients for your skin. The difference between the two: ampoules have a denser concentration of beneficial ingredients. That is why serums and ampoules may seem super expensive for only a 1-2oz. bottle of product. However, you only need 4-6 drops/1 pump of the oil because it is such a concentrated amount of product.

These products are like food for your skin. The key with these products is understanding the benefits of the main ingredients. For example, green tea is known for soothing and diminishing redness, good for someone with eczema or hyper-pigmentation. On the other hand, propolis is known for being an antibacterial and anti-inflammatory, which would benefit someone with acne. This is where it’s up to you to recognize what your skin is going through at the time, and search for products to target that specific ailment.

Moisturizer
Face Oil • Emulsion • Cream

[NECESSARY]

Moisturizers help to keep your skin hydrated throughout the day/night. They also can prevent your skin from over-producing oil to compensate for dry weather. Depending on the season and the climate of where you live, you might want to use a lighter or heavier moisturizer. Emulsions are a light, liquid-gel moisturizer typically used in the Summer. Face oils are similar, but they are usually a plant-based oil mixture. Creams can also come in a gel form for the Summer, but they usually range from a medium to heavy consistency for the Fall and Winter.

Eye Cream
Brightening • Cooling • Wrinkle-Fighting

[OPTIONAL]

Again, using an eye cream is personal. If you think you need one, there are specific ones for deep hydration, to reduce puffiness, and to firm and lift. However, sometimes less is more, and you can simply use your moisturizer around your eyes. But, remember that the skin around your eyes is thinner and more delicate than the skin on the rest of your face, so it may be more susceptible to react to a normal moisturizer.

Spot Treatment
Acne • Sun Spots • Wrinkles

[OPTIONAL]

When we hear “spot treatment,” we typically think of acne spot treatments. However, there are other types of spot treatments for dark spots, wrinkles, hyper-pigmentation, etc. Some may even be referred to as serums, but they are meant for only those trouble areas. These treatments usually come in a very small bottle and are a strong concentration of an ingredient needed for a specific issue. I always keep an acne spot treatment handy for those blemishes before they can become something painful and red. However, I only have to use it maybe once a week.

Sunscreen
SPF 30 • SPF 50+

[NECESSARY]

I used to hate putting on sunscreen as a kid. And I’m from California! Every time we went to the beach, my mom would force me to slather sunscreen all over my body…and because I was horrible at reapplying, I almost always came home with a severe sunburn somewhere on my body. I used to admire my siblings who had significantly tanner skin than me, and thought that if I was tanner I wouldn’t have to apply and reapply so much sunscreen. However, Korean Beauty Secrets says, “Sun protection is simply the most effective, repeatedly proven defense we have against dark spots, skin damage, fine lines, and wrinkles.”

Despite my siblings’ tan skin, they were not immune to the anti-aging and cancer-causing properties of the sun’s rays. Today, there are SO many facial sunscreens that are light and soothing, and feel like a normal moisturizer. Using makeup with SPF 15, 20, or even 30 is not enough, because the tint ingredients dilute the UVA & UVB protection. It is necessary to use a facial sunscreen separately, and remember to apply it down your neck and décolletage!

Wash-off Masks
Detox • Exfoliate/Peel • Moisturize

[OPTIONAL]

Wash-off masks can do so much for your skin! Revitalize, detox, renew, hydrate, and plum. Again, it all depends on what you need. I’ve heard it’s best to do detox masks at least a week before a big event because it might bring some toxins or blemishes to the surface, and they need time to fully heal. Hydration masks could be good to do the night before an event to help plump up your skin and refresh it. And I like to do a peel mask the morning of an event because it helps slough off all my dead skin, and helps my makeup apply smoother.

Sleeping Pack / Sheet Masks
Hydrate • Skin-turnover • Brighten • Fight Hyper-pigmentation

[OPTIONAL]

These masks aren’t just for the lazy girl, but they’re also probably more effective than a wash-off mask. A sleeping pack is a mask that you wear overnight and wash off in the morning–when your skin is plump and glowing from all the infused moisture! Sleeping packs are perfect for any season (especially in dry areas and winter seasons) and, again, can specifically target dehydration, dullness, and cell turnover.

Same goes for sheet masks. Sheet masks can be made of a variety of different materials–fiber/pulp/hydro gel/bio cellulose–soaked in facial essence. You take the facial sheet out, place it on your face, and let it sit for 30 minutes, or until the sheet is mostly dried. Then, you take it off and pat in any essence still sitting on your face with your fingertips. I LOVE using these almost every night after I double-clean and tone my face. It’s an extra boost of moisture before I finish my routine and go to bed. However, I would recommend going for a sleeping pack first, and saving sheet masks for special occasions or spa nights. As cheap as sheet masks can be, sleeping packs are probably more cost-efficient in the end because you get more masks out of the pack than you would buying a set of sheet masks for the same price.

End Note:

Try listening and analyzing your skin on a daily basis. Figure out what routine works best for you! If you are a minimalist, look for 2-in-1, or 3-in-1 products like a strong essence instead of purchasing a toner and a serum as well. Or, you can get a toner with exfoliation properties instead of purchasing a physical exfoliant or peel mask. Start by figuring out your skin type, then take a look at your current products, and question if they are actually helping to improve your skin, or even preventing it from getting worse…or if they’re just stripping it and keeping it at bay.
